Compact, efficient, cheap and easy to use. These are just a few of the rationale in the top of my head why families now still buy and use toaster ovens. Previously the enormous high tech ovens had an edge but today's technologies have made countertop ovens capable of baking, toasting and broiling just as excellent as their big brother counterparts. New toaster ovens nowadays are equipped with convection technology which allows better and quicker cooking time.
One of the benefits of a convection toaster oven is its ability to cook evenly, cook with lower temperatures settings and complete over a shorter period of time. With all these new toaster ovens you get better results more consistently. However, because a convection toaster oven is a relatively new technology than the over toasters of older, you'll need to learn some new cooking techniques. But let us start off with just three.
Among the first and most important tip for cooking in a convection toaster oven is to: READ the MANUAL. This is only one of the most frequent mistakes people do when they buy a new appliance or gadget. They take the manual from the box and return it without a second appearance. They believe they could run everything on the fly.
However, with toast ovens equipped with convection technologies it would be prudent to read the guide so you can find the specific settings for your favorite recipes. Since the qualities of the oven can be used differently for each recipe, it might be best to familiarize yourself with your toaster's features, controls, capabilities, limitations etc..
The next cooking tip is utilizing your toaster oven for roasting. Make certain that you roast the meat with exactly the exact same temperature but cooking it only half the time indicated in the recipe. The reason behind the halved period is the toaster oven is smaller and the convection process actually reduces the total cooking time. It's best when roasting, you use a meat thermometer to double check if the meat is done. As you may already know, the heat generated in the convection process is ideal for roasting potatoes and other veggies.
The next suggestion is for baking. Yes you can bake with a convection toaster oven but it would be best to lower the temperature indicated on your recipes by roughly 25°F. Do not lower the cooking time, just the temperature. In terms of baking tools, vivid steel or aluminum utensils will be great for cakes and biscuits. The shiny surface of the pans will reveal the heat permitting the oven to produce better looking pastries. However, breads and pies will require dull, steel pans therefore the heat is absorbed more for better tasting crusts.
These are the top few hints but I would love to add a few safety tips when using a convection toaster oven as well. When buying one look for a version that have an automatic shut-off feature for extra safety. Be sure to always unplug the oven after every use. It would be best to refrain from using metal utensils inside of a toaster oven and eventually keep the oven clean and make sure crumbs, food pieces and drippings do not collect on the floor.
